Finding My Heart ~ On A Hot Summer’s Day

Gabby ~ Queen Extraordinaire The scorching sun was beating down upon me; my skin turning bright red as I watched the blisters quickly begin to form on my arms.  Nah, I'm just kidding.  It was hot on that August day don't get me wrong; the heat was totally tolerable and manageable  for me at least.   But then again, I wasn't the one wearing a fur coat. As I'm sure you figured out by now, I'm talking about my little four legged child Gabby.  She is an English Labrador Retriever - Queen Extraordinaire.  Bless her little heart, she just has zero tolerance for the heat.  Anything above 80 degrees and she is just plain miserable.  You can imagine then, what was happening on this wonderful  95 degree warm, sunny day.  It only took an hour of her constant whining and panting for me to finally give in and take a break.  I knew Continue reading ...

Finding My Heart ~ In My Chinese Chicken Salad

I hate cabbage.  Okay, hate is a pretty strong word especially since I'm supposed to be promoting love - so let me start over. I am joyfully in dislike of said, 'cabbage'.  It isn't the taste that is so bad, nor the crunch or that special smell that reminds me of working in the mud bathes in Calistoga as a teenager.  It is the fact that my poor little gut just can't seem to digest it easily. (And yes, if you are thinking about farts, you are correct). I, however, continue to eat it because of all of the wonderful health benefits of doing so.  It's a great source fiber, super good for increasing the alkalinity of your gut environment and is loaded with  Vitamin C, B6, Potassium, folic acid, biotin, calcium, magnesium and manganese.  It also  is one of the better sources for those cancer fighting phytonutrients like glucocinolates. I try not to grumble Continue reading ...

Finding My Heart ~The Beginning

I love hearts.   After sitting here for 2 hours trying to create the most catchy opening sentence, this is what I've come up with.  I love hearts.  Of course, that isn't solely what I want to convey, it is merely a simple opening to a much bigger thought process that has been bubbling beneath the surface of my soul for several months now.  I think more specifically what I would like to address is, 'Where did all the love go?'  I don't mean to sound like a pessimist, but for goodness sake people, put away the hate and bring on a little more love! As I began to deeply ponder this question, an odd thing began to happen - I began to see more hearts, everywhere.  And I mean EVERYWHERE, all the time.  So much so that I could no longer ignore their presence in my life.  I had to stop and ask myself,  What Continue reading ...

Occupational Therapy – Growing good things.

I have been asked so many times, “What is Occupational Therapy anyway? Do you help people get jobs?”   Or I’ve had comments like, “Oh yeah, I know what that is. You go into different work places and make sure people are doing their jobs right.” Well…Yes, and No. As an Occupational Therapist, I look at what you like to do, what prevents you from doing it, and then I help you find a way to either do it on your own again, or I determine what compensatory strategies you may need in order to do a modified version of that task so you can engage and enjoy it again. Occupation in itself is ANYTHING that you choose to spend your time doing. Some things we have to do, for example, personal hygiene and basic daily self-care tasks like eating, bathing and personal grooming.  It can also include how you are able to do your job; Continue reading ...

Help I’ve Fallen And I Can’t Get Up – Back Pain No More!

"Help!  I've fallen and I can't get up!" That was me just a little over a year ago. I was the typical story: I stood up, slightly turned to reach for a towel and “pop”! That’s all she wrote. Seconds later I had excruciating pain that took my breath away and put me into a state of shock. I not only hurt like hell, but the pain immediately created a sense of fear that ran deep into the depths of my soul. Was this it? Had I just lost my independence? Was I forever going to be disabled? Intuitively I knew I needed to lay flat on the floor and bend my knees to elevate the pressure in my low back, so down I went. As a clinician I knew what it meant to have a level of pain that bad; I knew deep down I was eventually going to need to get medical help. Continue reading ...

Put Your Day Behind You – Get A Better Night’s Sleep

One of the most important things we can do for our health and wellness is to get a good night’s rest. That said, there are so many people, (me included) that cannot seem to make that happen. Often we are plagued with endless internal conversations, and non-productive mind chatter that rambles on and on the moment we attempt to lay our head to rest. “Did I pay that bill?”,    “Is that report complete?” “Are the kids alright?”     “I can’t believe that happened today” On and on it goes. Oh dear God make it stop! Or even worse, we immediately fall asleep but then like clockwork (yes, pun intended) we wake up at 3:00am with our brains pumping out random thoughts like the Energizer Bunny on steroids. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) acknowledges that sleep deprivation is becoming a public health hazard because of the increased links to “motor vehicle crashes, industrial disasters, Continue reading ...

Not following your intuition can really stink!

It was a lovely evening for a walk.  The sun was just setting providing the most glorious sunset, and the air was warm and inviting.  It seemed like the perfect time to get out, walk the dog, and have some bonding time with my husband. By the time we left the house the sky was already dark and the moon had risen, so I grabbed the flashlight, knowing that the road we would be walking on was uneven and also knowing that country living does have it’s fair share of wild critters.  With my husband, the dog and a flashlight in hand we all started off on our walk. “You don’t need that flashlight” he said, “the moon is bright enough to see where we are going.” “I have to turn the light on.  I have to see where I’m going!” I said.  With one quick click the path was illuminated and my worst fears Continue reading ...

It’s Just Not That Spooky!

Several days ago I saw something on TV that really upset me; and yes, I do understand that can happen when you’re watching in the middle of the day.  This show however hit close to home which is why I think it is still bothering me.  The program is called: Psychic Kids. This is what has me so upset:  the story line of this program is based on children and teens all that have a strong natural ability to communicate with Spirit.  Each episode tells the story of a child and their journey in experiencing Spirit and how they learn to deal with their gifts.  They are being guided by adults who are skilled psychic mediums who teach them how to understand what they see and feel. This is a great premise and a fabulous opportunity for educating our society about energy and all things of spiritual nature.  Where this show went wrong was by Continue reading ...

Inspiration at it’s best.

I would like to share with you the story of an incredible woman named Diana. We met back in the 1980’s when I was working as a therapist in a local hospital.  She was one of those people that just meeting her would change your life forever. I am blessed to say that I had the honor to be her friend for many years. This is the story of one woman who has inspired me and continues to do so even though she no longer walks this earth. A rose for my friend Diana When I first met Diana she was in her early 30’s, divorced, and a mother of 2 teenagers who was living with an inoperable astrocytoma spinal tumor.  The doctors had given her 6 months to live. I recall her telling me how odd she thought that was, that someone was telling her how long she had to live.  Apparently Continue reading ...

Grieving the loss – and one very determined soul.

Today I had the honor to read for a family who lost their son in a tragic accident.  Mom and Dad both, understandably, lost in grief; unable to see how they were to move themselves forward in life.  For them, time had stood still.  Trying to navigate all the emotions of grief and guilt was obviously wearing them down.  “If I’m not missing him, I feel guilty” was the most prominent thought holding them back and wearing them down. Their son on the other hand, was on the Otherside trying his hardest to help them through their process.  “It’s about time!” he said to me the moment they scheduled the appointment.  “Games on now - When are we going to be talking to them?” It all began on a cold winter’s night. This story actually begins several months ago during a completely unrelated reading.  I had scheduled a session with a young woman who was Continue reading ...
